This Blackened Salmon with Avocado, Cucumber & Tomato Salad is a fresh, flavorful meal that combines perfectly seared salmon with a crisp, refreshing salad. The smoky Cajun-style seasoning creates a delicious crust on the salmon, while creamy avocado, juicy tomatoes, crunchy cucumber, and a bright lemon dressing balance every bite.
Ingredients
For the Blackened Salmon
- 4 salmon fillets, about 5–6 oz each
- 1½ tbsp olive oil
- 1 tbsp smoked paprika
- 1 tsp paprika
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp onion powder
- ½ tsp dried thyme
- ½ tsp dried oregano
- ½ tsp black pepper
- ½ tsp salt
- ¼ tsp cayenne pepper, optional
- 1 tbsp butter
- Lemon wedges, for serving
For the Avocado Salad
- 2 ripe avocados, diced
- 1 large cucumber, diced
- 2 cups cherry tomatoes, halved
- ¼ small red onion, thinly sliced
- 2 tbsp fresh parsley or cilantro, chopped
For the Dressing
- 3 tbsp olive oil
- 2 tbsp fresh lemon juice
- 1 tbsp red wine vinegar
- 1 tsp honey
- 1 small garlic clove, minced
- ½ tsp salt
- ¼ tsp black pepper
Instructions
1. Prepare the Salmon
Pat the salmon fillets dry with paper towels.
In a small bowl, combine the smoked paprika, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, thyme, oregano, black pepper, salt, and cayenne pepper.
Brush the salmon lightly with olive oil, then generously coat both sides with the seasoning mixture.
2. Make the Salad Dressing
In a small bowl, whisk together the olive oil, lemon juice, red wine vinegar, honey, minced garlic, salt, and black pepper.
Set aside.
3. Prepare the Salad
Add the diced avocado, cucumber, cherry tomatoes, red onion, and fresh parsley or cilantro to a large bowl.
Pour the dressing over the vegetables.
Gently toss everything together, being careful not to mash the avocado.
Set aside while you cook the salmon.
4. Blacken the Salmon
Heat a large heavy skillet over medium-high heat.
Add the butter and allow it to melt.
Place the seasoned salmon into the hot skillet.
Cook for approximately 4–5 minutes on the first side, without moving the fish too much. Flip carefully and cook for another 3–4 minutes, depending on thickness.
The salmon should have a deeply browned crust and should reach 145°F (63°C) internally.
5. Finish the Dish
Remove the salmon from the skillet and let it rest for a couple of minutes.
Place a generous portion of the avocado cucumber tomato salad onto each plate.
Top with a blackened salmon fillet.
Finish with fresh lemon juice and a little chopped parsley or cilantro.
Tips for Perfect Blackened Salmon
- Dry the salmon thoroughly before seasoning to help the spices form a crust.
- Make sure the skillet is hot before adding the salmon.
- Don’t constantly move the salmon while it cooks; letting it sit helps develop that beautiful blackened crust.
- Adjust the cayenne according to your preferred spice level.
- Use ripe but firm avocados so they hold their shape in the salad.
- Toss the avocado salad gently to avoid turning it mushy.
Easy Variations
Add a Creamy Sauce
Serve the salmon with a quick lime-garlic yogurt sauce made with Greek yogurt, lime juice, garlic, and a pinch of salt.
Make It a Bowl
Serve everything over cooked white rice, brown rice, quinoa, or cauliflower rice.
Add More Vegetables
Try adding bell peppers, corn, radishes, spinach, or shredded cabbage.
Make It Extra Spicy
Add extra cayenne or drizzle the finished salmon with your favorite hot sauce.
What to Serve With It
This dish is delicious on its own, but you can also serve it with:
- Cilantro-lime rice
- Roasted potatoes
- Grilled corn
- Garlic bread
- Steamed vegetables
- Quinoa

Storage
For the best texture, store the salmon and salad separately.
