Avocado Seed Tea
Avocado seed tea is made by simmering the large seed from an avocado in water. It has a mild, earthy flavor and is sometimes used as a traditional herbal drink. However, there isn’t strong human evidence that avocado seed tea provides special health benefits, and the seed contains plant compounds that haven’t been well established as safe in concentrated amounts.
Ingredients
- 1 fresh avocado seed
- 2 cups (480 ml) water
- ½ teaspoon honey — optional
- 1–2 teaspoons lemon juice — optional
- Small piece of fresh ginger — optional
Directions
- Wash the seed:
Remove the avocado seed and rinse it thoroughly to remove any remaining fruit. - Dry and cut:
Pat it dry and allow it to dry for a few hours. Carefully cut it into smaller pieces. The seed is very hard, so use caution. - Boil the water:
Add 2 cups of water to a saucepan and bring it to a boil. - Simmer:
Add the avocado seed pieces. Reduce the heat and simmer for approximately 10–15 minutes. - Strain:
Remove from the heat and strain the liquid through a fine strainer. - Flavor:
Add a little lemon juice, honey, or ginger if desired. - Serve:
Let it cool slightly and drink warm.
About the Claimed Benefits
Avocado seeds contain various plant compounds and antioxidants, which is why they are sometimes promoted for:
- Antioxidant activity
- Digestive health
- Inflammation
- General wellness
However, these claims are not well supported by clinical studies in humans, particularly for tea made from the seed.
⚠️ Important
Because safety data on regularly consuming avocado seed preparations are limited, I wouldn’t recommend drinking avocado seed tea regularly or in large amounts. Pregnant or breastfeeding people, children, and people taking medications should avoid using it medicinally unless a healthcare professional advises otherwise.
If you’re looking for a safer tea for bloating or digestion, ginger, peppermint, or fennel tea have much better-established traditional uses.
