No-Oven Stovetop Flatbread
This No-Oven Stovetop Flatbread is soft, fluffy, and lightly golden, and it requires no oven or yeast. Made with simple pantry ingredients, it’s perfect for wraps, curries, grilled meats, eggs, or simply brushing with garlic butter.
Ingredients
- 2 cups (250 g) all-purpose flour
- ¾ teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- ¾ cup (180 ml) warm water, approximately
- 2 tablespoons plain yogurt
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
- Extra flour, for rolling
- Butter or ghee, for brushing
Optional Garlic Butter
- 2 tablespoons melted butter
- 1 garlic clove, finely minced
- 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley or cilantro
Directions
1. Make the Dough
Add the flour, salt, sugar, and baking powder to a large bowl.
Mix well.
Add the yogurt and vegetable oil.
Gradually pour in the warm water while mixing with your hand or a wooden spoon.
Continue mixing until a soft dough forms.
Don’t add all the water at once—you may need slightly less or slightly more depending on your flour.
2. Knead the Dough
Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface.
Knead for approximately 5–7 minutes, until smooth and elastic.
The dough should feel soft and slightly tacky, but it shouldn’t stick heavily to your hands.
If it’s too sticky, add a little flour.
If it’s too dry, add a teaspoon of water at a time.
3. Rest the Dough
Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl.
Cover it with a clean kitchen towel.
Let it rest for 20–30 minutes.
This relaxes the gluten and makes the flatbread much easier to roll.
4. Divide the Dough
Divide the dough into 6 equal pieces.
Roll each piece into a smooth ball.
Cover the balls while you work so they don’t dry out.
5. Roll the Flatbreads
Lightly flour your work surface.
Roll one dough ball into a circle approximately 7–8 inches (18–20 cm) wide.
Try to keep the thickness even.
Don’t roll it extremely thin—the flatbread should remain soft and slightly fluffy.
Repeat with the remaining dough.
6. Heat the Pan
Place a cast-iron skillet, heavy frying pan, or nonstick skillet over medium-high heat.
Allow it to become properly hot.
You don’t need to add oil to the pan.
7. Cook the Flatbread
Place one rolled flatbread onto the hot skillet.
Cook for approximately 30–60 seconds, until bubbles begin appearing on the surface.
Flip it.
Cook the other side for another 30–60 seconds.
You should see golden-brown spots developing.
Flip once more if necessary and cook until the bread is completely cooked.
Don’t press down too aggressively because this can prevent it from puffing.
8. Brush With Butter
Immediately transfer the cooked flatbread to a plate.
Brush it generously with melted butter or ghee.
Cover it with a clean kitchen towel.
This traps steam and keeps the flatbreads soft and flexible.
Repeat with the remaining dough.
Optional Garlic Butter Version
Mix melted butter with minced garlic and chopped parsley or cilantro.
Brush the hot flatbreads with the garlic butter immediately after cooking.
For extra flavor, sprinkle with a little sesame or nigella seed.

Tips for Extra Soft Flatbread
Add More Yogurt
For a softer, more tender texture, increase the yogurt to ¼ cup and slightly reduce the water.
Use Ghee
Brushing the hot flatbreads with ghee gives them a richer flavor and keeps them wonderfully soft.
Make Them Extra Fluffy
After placing the flatbread in the hot skillet, cover the pan for about 20–30 seconds. The trapped steam can help it puff.
Make Garlic Herb Flatbread
Brush the cooked bread with garlic butter and sprinkle with:
- Fresh cilantro
- Parsley
- Oregano
- Sesame seeds
- Nigella seeds

Serve your stovetop flatbread with:
