Colon Cancer: Common Signs and Symptoms
Colon cancer may cause no symptoms in its early stages, which is why screening is important. When symptoms do occur, common warning signs include:
- Blood in the stool or bleeding from the rectum
- Black or very dark stools
- A persistent change in bowel habits, such as new constipation or diarrhea
- Narrower-than-usual stools
- Feeling like you still need to have a bowel movement after going
- Persistent abdominal cramps or pain
- Unexplained weight loss
- Weakness or unusual tiredness, sometimes related to anemia
- Reduced appetite
Important
These symptoms do not automatically mean colon cancer. Hemorrhoids, infections, irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, and other conditions can cause similar symptoms. However, persistent or unexplained symptoms should be evaluated by a doctor.
See a doctor promptly if you notice blood in your stool, unexplained weight loss, persistent bowel changes, or ongoing abdominal pain. If you have heavy rectal bleeding, severe abdominal pain, dizziness/fainting, or marked weakness, seek urgent medical care.
If you tell me your age and exactly what symptoms you’re experiencing (including how long you’ve had them), I can help you understand whether they sound more like common digestive problems or something that should be checked soon.
