Cinnamon and Turmeric Tea
Cinnamon and Turmeric Tea is a warm, comforting drink made with aromatic cinnamon, earthy turmeric, fresh ginger, and a touch of honey. It’s an easy caffeine-free beverage that can be enjoyed in the morning, after a meal, or before bedtime.
Turmeric contains curcumin, a compound studied for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, while cinnamon and ginger add warmth and flavor. This tea can be a pleasant addition to a balanced diet, but it should not be considered a treatment for medical conditions.
Ingredients
- 1 cup water
- ½ teaspoon ground turmeric
- ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ½ teaspoon freshly grated ginger
- 1 teaspoon honey, optional
- 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice, optional
- A small pinch of black pepper
Directions
1. Heat the Water
Pour 1 cup of water into a small saucepan and bring it to a gentle boil.
2. Add the Spices
Reduce the heat and add the turmeric, cinnamon, ginger, and a small pinch of black pepper.
The black pepper is traditionally added to turmeric drinks because piperine, a compound in black pepper, can increase curcumin absorption.
3. Simmer
Allow the mixture to gently simmer for 5–7 minutes.
Stir occasionally so the spices don’t settle too much at the bottom.
4. Strain
Remove the saucepan from the heat.
Pour the tea through a fine strainer into a cup to remove the ginger and larger spice particles.
5. Add Honey and Lemon
Allow the tea to cool slightly, then stir in honey and lemon juice if desired.
Enjoy warm.
Potential Benefits
Cinnamon and turmeric tea can be a flavorful way to increase your intake of plant compounds. Turmeric’s curcumin has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity, while ginger may help with mild digestive discomfort and nausea.
However, drinking this tea does not cure infections, diabetes, arthritis, weight gain, or other diseases, and it shouldn’t replace prescribed medication.
Tips for Better Flavor
- Use fresh ginger for a stronger, brighter flavor.
- Add a little honey if the turmeric tastes too earthy.
- Use a cinnamon stick instead of ground cinnamon for a cleaner tea.
- Add a small amount of milk for a creamy turmeric latte.
- Drink it fresh rather than preparing a large quantity and storing it for several days.
Important Precautions
Culinary amounts of turmeric and cinnamon are generally well tolerated by most people. However, concentrated turmeric supplements or large amounts of turmeric may interact with certain medicines.
If you take blood thinners, have gallbladder problems, are pregnant, or regularly take medications, ask your healthcare professional before consuming concentrated turmeric preparations.
Cinnamon also contains compounds that can be problematic in very large amounts, particularly cassia cinnamon.
