Homemade Milk Candy
Homemade Milk Candy is a simple, creamy, melt-in-your-mouth treat made with milk, sugar, and a few basic ingredients. It has a soft, chewy texture and a rich milky flavor, making it perfect for tea time, dessert trays, or homemade gifts.
Ingredients
- 4 cups whole milk
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 2 tablespoons butter
- ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- ½ cup powdered milk
- 2 tablespoons cornstarch
- 2 tablespoons water
- ¼ teaspoon cardamom powder — optional
- Chopped pistachios or almonds — optional
Directions
- Prepare the pan:
Lightly grease an 8-inch square baking dish or small tray with butter. Line it with parchment paper, leaving some overhang for easy removal. - Mix the cornstarch:
In a small bowl, combine the cornstarch with 2 tablespoons of water. Stir until completely smooth with no lumps. - Heat the milk:
Pour the milk into a heavy-bottomed saucepan and place it over medium heat. Add the powdered milk and whisk well until completely dissolved. - Add the sugar:
Add the sugar and salt. Continue stirring until the sugar dissolves completely. - Thicken the mixture:
Add the cornstarch slurry while continuously whisking. Cook over medium-low heat, stirring constantly so the mixture doesn’t stick to the bottom. - Cook until very thick:
After several minutes, the mixture will gradually become thick and creamy. Continue cooking until it becomes thick enough to pull away from the sides of the pan. This usually takes around 15–25 minutes, depending on your heat and saucepan. - Add butter and flavoring:
Reduce the heat to low and add the butter, vanilla extract, and cardamom if using. Stir thoroughly until the butter melts and everything is well incorporated. - Check the consistency:
The mixture should be very thick and sticky, almost like a soft dough. If it still looks runny, continue cooking for a few more minutes while stirring constantly. - Transfer to the pan:
Immediately spoon the hot mixture into the prepared pan. Spread it evenly using a greased spatula or the back of a spoon. - Add nuts:
Sprinkle chopped pistachios or almonds over the top if desired. Press them gently into the candy. - Cool completely:
Allow the candy to cool at room temperature for about 30 minutes, then refrigerate for 1–2 hours until firm. - Cut and serve:
Lift the candy out using the parchment paper and cut it into small squares, rectangles, or bite-sized pieces.
Tips for Perfect Milk Candy
- Use whole milk for the richest flavor and creamiest texture.
- Keep the heat medium-low once the mixture starts thickening.
- Stir continuously to prevent burning or sticking.
- Don’t cut the candy while it’s still hot because it may fall apart.
- For a richer flavor, add a little extra butter.
- Cardamom gives the candy a lovely South Asian-style aroma.
- Store the finished candy in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
Serving Ideas
Serve the milk candy chilled or allow it to sit at room temperature for a few minutes before serving. It pairs especially well with tea or coffee and makes a lovely homemade sweet for Eid, parties, and family gatherings.
