Ingredients
For the Steak & Shrimp
- 8 oz sirloin steak, thinly sliced
- 8 oz large shrimp, peeled and deveined
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
For the Noodles & Vegetables
- 12 oz chow mein noodles or thin egg noodles
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
- 1 small onion, thinly sliced
- 1 cup shredded cabbage
- 1 medium carrot, julienned
- 1 bell pepper, thinly sliced
- 1 cup bean sprouts
- 2 green onions, sliced
For the Chow Mein Sauce
- ¼ cup low-sodium soy sauce
- 2 tablespoons oyster sauce
- 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce
- 1 tablespoon sesame oil
- 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
- 1 teaspoon brown sugar
- ½ teaspoon chili flakes, optional
- 2 tablespoons water
Instructions
1. Prepare the Sauce
In a small bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, oyster sauce, hoisin sauce, sesame oil, rice vinegar, brown sugar, chili flakes, and water.
Set aside.
2. Cook the Noodles
Prepare the chow mein noodles according to the package directions.
Drain well and toss with a small amount of oil to prevent them from sticking.
Set aside.
3. Cook the Steak
Pat the steak dry and slice it thinly against the grain.
Heat a large wok or skillet over high heat and add 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil.
Add the steak in a single layer. Cook for approximately 1–2 minutes per side, or until browned but still tender.
Transfer the steak to a plate.
4. Cook the Shrimp
Add the shrimp to the same wok.
Cook for about 1–2 minutes per side, until pink, opaque, and cooked through.
Add the minced garlic and ginger during the final 30 seconds.
Transfer the shrimp to the plate with the steak.
5. Stir-Fry the Vegetables
Add another tablespoon of oil to the wok if needed.
Add the onion, cabbage, carrot, and bell pepper.
Stir-fry over high heat for approximately 3–4 minutes. The vegetables should soften slightly while retaining some crispness.
Add the bean sprouts and cook for another minute.
6. Add the Noodles
Return the cooked noodles to the wok.
Pour the prepared sauce over everything and toss thoroughly using tongs or two spatulas.
Continue stir-frying for 2–3 minutes, allowing the noodles to absorb the sauce.
7. Add the Steak and Shrimp
Return the steak and shrimp to the wok.
Toss everything together for another 1–2 minutes, just until heated through.
Add the sliced green onions and give everything one final toss.
8. Serve
Transfer the chow mein to serving bowls and serve immediately.
For extra flavor, garnish with additional green onions, sesame seeds, or a drizzle of chili oil.
Tips for the Best Steak & Shrimp Chow Mein
Slice the steak thinly: Cutting against the grain makes the beef more tender and allows it to cook quickly.
Use high heat: A hot wok gives the vegetables and meat that classic stir-fried flavor.
Don’t overcrowd the wok: Cook the steak and shrimp separately so they brown instead of steaming.
Don’t overcook the shrimp: Remove them as soon as they become opaque and firm.
Keep the vegetables slightly crisp: They add texture and balance to the soft noodles.
Easy Variations
Add mushrooms, snow peas, broccoli, baby corn, or water chestnuts for extra vegetables.
For a spicier chow mein, increase the chili flakes or add chili garlic sauce.
You can substitute chicken, pork, or tofu for the steak or shrimp.
For a deeper savory flavor, add a small splash of dark soy sauce to the finished noodles.
Storage
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
Reheat in a skillet over medium heat with a small splash of water or broth, tossing until hot.
This Steak & Shrimp Chow Mein brings together tender steak, juicy shrimp, crunchy vegetables, and saucy noodles for a flavorful homemade meal that tastes like your favorite takeout—only fresher and completely customizable.
