Tender, juicy ribs coated in a smoky, sweet, and tangy barbecue glaze, then slowly baked until the meat is wonderfully tender. This easy oven method gives you delicious fall-apart ribs without needing a grill or smoker.
🍖 Ingredients
For the Ribs
- 2–3 lbs (900 g–1.4 kg) baby back ribs or spare ribs
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 2 teaspoons paprika
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon chili powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- ½ teaspoon smoked paprika
- ½ teaspoon ground cumin, optional
For the BBQ Sauce
- 1½ cups barbecue sauce
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon honey
- 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- ½ teaspoon smoked paprika
- ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper, optional
👩🍳 Instructions
1. Prepare the Ribs
Preheat your oven to 300°F (150°C).
Remove the membrane from the bone side of the ribs if it is still attached. Slide a small knife under the membrane, loosen it, then pull it away using a paper towel for better grip.
Pat the ribs dry.
2. Season the Ribs
In a small bowl, combine the paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, brown sugar, chili powder, salt, black pepper, smoked paprika, and cumin.
Rub the ribs lightly with olive oil, then generously coat both sides with the spice mixture.
3. Wrap the Ribs
Place each rack on a large sheet of heavy-duty aluminum foil.
Wrap tightly, making sure the packet is well sealed.
Place the wrapped ribs on a baking sheet.
4. Bake Low and Slow
Bake for approximately 2½–3½ hours, depending on the type and thickness of the ribs.
Baby back ribs generally cook more quickly, while spare ribs may need additional time.
The ribs should be very tender when finished.
5. Prepare the BBQ Sauce
While the ribs are baking, combine the barbecue sauce, brown sugar, honey, apple cider vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, smoked paprika, and cayenne in a small saucepan.
Warm over low heat for 3–5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Set aside.
6. Add the BBQ Sauce
Carefully unwrap the ribs and discard the foil.
Increase the oven temperature to 425°F (220°C).
Place the ribs meat-side up on the baking sheet.
Brush generously with the BBQ sauce.
7. Caramelize
Bake uncovered for 10–15 minutes.
Brush with another layer of BBQ sauce and return to the oven for another 5–10 minutes, until the sauce becomes sticky, glossy, and caramelized.
For an even darker glaze, broil for 1–2 minutes, watching closely so the sauce doesn’t burn.
8. Rest and Serve
Remove the ribs from the oven and let them rest for 10 minutes.
Slice between the bones and serve with extra BBQ sauce.
⭐ Tips for Tender BBQ Ribs
- Removing the membrane helps the seasoning penetrate and improves the eating texture.
- Baking the ribs tightly wrapped keeps them moist while they tenderize.
- Don’t rush the low-temperature cooking stage.
- Apply BBQ sauce toward the end so the sugars don’t burn.
- Let the ribs rest before slicing.
- Spare ribs usually require more cooking time than baby back ribs.
