Old-Fashioned Chocolate Pie
Rich, creamy, chocolatey, and wonderfully nostalgic, this Old-Fashioned Chocolate Pie is the kind of dessert that tastes like it came straight from Grandma’s kitchen. A flaky pie crust is filled with a smooth homemade chocolate custard and finished with a fluffy layer of whipped cream or meringue.
Ingredients
For the Pie
- 1 unbaked 9-inch pie crust
- 1½ cups granulated sugar
- ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- ¼ cup all-purpose flour
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- 3 cups whole milk
- 4 large egg yolks
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
For the Topping
- 1 cup heavy whipping cream
- 2 tablespoons powdered sugar
- ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
1. Bake the Pie Crust
Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
Place the pie crust into a 9-inch pie dish and gently press it into the bottom and sides. Prick the bottom several times with a fork.
Bake for about 12–15 minutes, or until lightly golden. Remove from the oven and allow it to cool completely.
2. Make the Chocolate Filling
In a medium saucepan, whisk together the sugar, cocoa powder, flour, and salt.
Gradually whisk in the milk until smooth and there are no lumps.
In a separate bowl, lightly beat the egg yolks. Slowly add about ½ cup of the warm milk mixture to the yolks while whisking constantly. This gently warms the eggs and prevents them from scrambling.
Pour the egg mixture back into the saucepan.
3. Cook the Custard
Place the saucepan over medium heat. Cook while whisking constantly until the mixture becomes thick and creamy and begins to gently bubble.
Continue cooking for another 1–2 minutes, stirring constantly.
Remove from the heat and immediately stir in the butter and vanilla extract.
The filling should be smooth, glossy, and thick enough to coat the back of a spoon.
4. Fill the Pie
Pour the warm chocolate filling into the cooled pie crust. Smooth the top with a spatula.
Place plastic wrap directly against the surface of the filling to prevent a skin from forming.
Refrigerate for at least 4 hours, preferably overnight, until completely chilled and set.
5. Add the Whipped Cream
Beat the heavy cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract until soft or medium peaks form.
Spread the whipped cream over the chilled chocolate pie just before serving.
For an extra chocolate touch, sprinkle the top with cocoa powder, chocolate shavings, or finely grated chocolate.
Tips for the Best Chocolate Pie
- Use whole milk for the creamiest filling.
- Whisk constantly while cooking the custard to prevent lumps or scorching.
- Don’t rush the chilling process—the pie needs several hours to fully set.
- For a deeper chocolate flavor, use high-quality unsweetened cocoa powder.
- For a richer filling, replace ½ cup of the milk with heavy cream.
How to Store
Cover the pie and refrigerate for up to 3–4 days. Keep it chilled until you’re ready to serve.
Serving Suggestion
Slice the pie cold and serve with an extra spoonful of whipped cream. A little chocolate syrup or grated chocolate on top makes it even more indulgent.
