If You Start Choking While Alone: What to Do
Choking is a medical emergency, and acting quickly matters. If you are alone and cannot breathe, speak, or cough forcefully:
- Call emergency services immediately if you can.
- Try to cough forcefully if you are still able to breathe or cough.
- If the blockage is severe, make a fist and place it just above your belly button. Grasp your fist with your other hand and deliver quick, forceful inward-and-upward abdominal thrusts.
- You can also press your upper abdomen forcefully against the edge of a firm surface, such as the back of a sturdy chair or countertop. Avoid sharp edges.
- Continue until the object is expelled or you become unable to respond.
If you become unconscious, emergency responders should be contacted and CPR should be started if someone is available to help.
Important: Choking can become fatal within minutes. If you’re able to call for emergency assistance, do so immediately. After a serious choking episode, seek medical evaluation because injuries can occur even after the obstruction is removed.
