Grits and Eggs Recipe
Creamy, buttery grits topped with perfectly cooked eggs make a simple, hearty, and comforting breakfast. This grits and eggs recipe is easy to prepare, filling, and perfect for busy mornings or a relaxed weekend breakfast.
Ingredients
For the Grits
- 1 cup stone-ground or regular grits
- 4 cups water or milk
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons butter
- ½ cup shredded cheddar cheese, optional
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper
For the Eggs
- 4 large eggs
- 1 tablespoon butter or cooking oil
- Salt, to taste
- Black pepper, to taste
Optional Toppings
- Chopped green onions
- Crispy bacon
- Shredded cheddar cheese
- Hot sauce
- Chopped fresh parsley
Directions
1. Cook the Grits
Bring the water or milk to a gentle boil in a medium saucepan.
Add the salt and slowly whisk in the grits to prevent lumps.
Reduce the heat to low and cook according to the package directions, stirring frequently. Regular grits usually take about 5–10 minutes, while stone-ground grits can take longer.
2. Make Them Creamy
Once the grits are tender and creamy, stir in the butter, black pepper, and shredded cheddar cheese if using.
Continue stirring until the cheese melts completely.
If the grits become too thick, add a splash of warm water or milk until they reach your preferred consistency.
3. Cook the Eggs
Heat the butter or oil in a skillet over medium heat.
Crack the eggs into the skillet and cook until the whites are set and the yolks reach your preferred doneness.
For scrambled eggs, whisk the eggs first, pour them into the skillet, and gently stir until cooked.
Season with salt and black pepper.
4. Assemble
Spoon the warm creamy grits into bowls.
Place the cooked eggs on top and sprinkle with additional cheese, green onions, parsley, or your favorite toppings.
Add a few drops of hot sauce for extra flavor if desired.
5. Serve
Serve immediately while the grits are hot and creamy and the eggs are fresh.
Recipe Tips
- For extra-creamy grits, use milk instead of some or all of the water.
- Stir the grits frequently while cooking to prevent sticking and lumps.
- Add cheese only after the grits have become tender.
- Fried, poached, scrambled, or soft-boiled eggs all work beautifully with grits.
- Add cooked bacon or sausage for a heartier breakfast.
- A little hot sauce adds a delicious Southern-style kick.
