Ingredients
- 1½ lb (680 g) ground beef
- 5–6 medium potatoes, thinly sliced
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 can (10.5 oz) cream of mushroom soup
- 1 cup milk
- 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese, divided
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 tablespoon butter or cooking oil
- 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley, optional
Directions
1. Preheat the Oven
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter or cooking spray.
2. Brown the Beef
Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and add the butter or oil.
Add the chopped onion and cook for 2–3 minutes until it begins to soften.
Add the ground beef and cook for 6–8 minutes, breaking it apart with a spoon, until browned and fully cooked.
Add the minced garlic, paprika, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. Stir for another minute.
Drain excess grease if necessary.
3. Prepare the Creamy Sauce
In a bowl, whisk together the cream of mushroom soup and milk until smooth.
4. Layer the Casserole
Arrange half of the sliced potatoes evenly in the prepared baking dish.
Spread half of the cooked ground beef mixture over the potatoes.
Pour half of the creamy soup mixture over the beef and potatoes.
Sprinkle with about ½ cup cheddar cheese.
Repeat the layers with the remaining potatoes, beef, sauce, and another ½ cup cheese.
5. Cover and Bake
Cover the baking dish tightly with aluminum foil.
Bake for approximately 50–60 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender when pierced with a fork.
6. Add the Cheese
Remove the foil and sprinkle the remaining 1 cup cheddar cheese evenly over the top.
Return the casserole to the oven and bake uncovered for another 10–15 minutes, until the cheese is melted and bubbling and the edges are golden.
7. Rest and Serve
Remove the casserole from the oven and let it rest for 10 minutes.
Garnish with fresh parsley if desired, then slice and serve warm.
Recipe Tips
- Slice the potatoes evenly so they cook at the same rate.
- Thin potato slices cook more quickly and become tender throughout.
- Don’t skip covering the casserole during the first part of baking; it helps the potatoes cook properly.
- Try sharp cheddar for a stronger cheese flavor.
- Add mushrooms, peas, corn, or bell peppers for extra vegetables.
- For a crispy topping, sprinkle breadcrumbs over the cheese before the final baking stage.
Make-Ahead Option
Assemble the casserole, cover it tightly, and refrigerate for up to 24 hours before baking.
When ready to cook, allow the chilled casserole to sit at room temperature briefly while the oven preheats, then bake until the potatoes are completely tender and the center reaches a safe serving temperature.
