For the White Chocolate Frosting

- 4 oz (115 g) white chocolate, melted and cooled
- ¼ cup heavy cream
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For the Chocolate Drizzle
- 3 oz (85 g) dark chocolate
- ⅓ cup heavy cream
- White chocolate curls, optional
Directions
1. Prepare the Cake Batter
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease two 9-inch round cake pans and line the bottoms with parchment paper.
In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
Add the eggs, buttermilk, vegetable oil, and vanilla. Mix until combined.
Slowly pour in the hot coffee or water while mixing. The batter will be relatively thin, which is normal.
2. Bake the Cake Layers
Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans.
Bake for 28–33 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean or with a few moist crumbs.
Cool the cakes in their pans for about 10 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.
3. Make the Dark Chocolate Frosting
Beat the softened butter until smooth and creamy.
Gradually add the powdered sugar and cocoa powder, alternating with the heavy cream.
Add the melted, cooled dark chocolate, vanilla, and salt. Beat for 2–3 minutes until smooth and silky.
4. Make the White Chocolate Frosting
Beat the softened butter until creamy.
Gradually add the powdered sugar and heavy cream. Add the melted, cooled white chocolate, vanilla, and salt.
Beat until smooth and fluffy. If the frosting is too soft, refrigerate it for 10–15 minutes before assembling the cake.
5. Assemble the Cake
Place one chocolate cake layer on a serving plate.
Spread a generous layer of dark chocolate frosting over the top.
Place the second cake layer on top and lightly cover the entire cake with a thin layer of dark chocolate frosting. Refrigerate for 20–30 minutes to set the crumb coat.
Spread the white chocolate frosting over the top and sides, creating a smooth finish. You can also alternate dark and white frosting for a beautiful two-tone appearance.
6. Prepare the Chocolate Drizzle
Place the chopped dark chocolate in a heatproof bowl.
Heat the heavy cream until hot but not boiling. Pour it over the chocolate and let it sit for 2 minutes.
Stir until smooth and glossy. Let the ganache cool slightly until it reaches a thick but pourable consistency.
7. Decorate
Drizzle the dark chocolate ganache around the edges of the chilled cake, allowing it to naturally drip down the sides.
Spread the remaining ganache over the center of the cake if desired.
Finish with white chocolate curls, dark chocolate shavings, or small chocolate pieces.
Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes before slicing.
Recipe Tips
- Make sure the melted chocolate has cooled before adding it to the frosting.
- Don’t overbake the cake layers; this helps keep them moist and tender.
- Chill the cake before adding the chocolate drizzle for cleaner drips.
- Use good-quality dark and white chocolate for the best flavor.
- For an even richer cake, add a thin layer of chocolate ganache between the cake layers.
- Let the cake sit at room temperature for about 20–30 minutes before serving for the creamiest frosting.
- Store covered in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
