Golden, crunchy, and seriously addictive, these Crispy Onion Ring Chips are an easy snack that turns simple onions into something incredibly delicious. Thinly sliced onions are coated in a seasoned crispy mixture and cooked until perfectly golden and crunchy. They make a wonderful appetizer, snack, or side dish and are especially delicious with your favorite dipping sauce.
Ingredients
- 2 large yellow or sweet onions
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- ½ cup cornstarch
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- ½ teaspoon onion powder
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup cold water
- ½ cup breadcrumbs or panko
- Vegetable oil, for frying
Instructions
1. Prepare the Onions
Peel the onions and slice them into very thin rounds. Separate the slices into individual rings.
For extra crispy chips, try to keep the slices relatively thin and even.
2. Prepare the Coating
In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, cornstarch, garlic powder, paprika, onion powder, black pepper, and salt.
Gradually add the cold water, whisking until you have a smooth, thick batter.
Place the breadcrumbs or panko in a separate shallow bowl.
3. Coat the Onion Rings
Dip each onion ring into the batter, making sure it is completely coated. Allow excess batter to drip back into the bowl.
Immediately transfer the battered onion ring to the breadcrumbs and gently press to coat.
Repeat with the remaining onion rings.
4. Fry Until Golden
Heat about 1–2 inches of vegetable oil in a deep skillet or saucepan to approximately 350°F (175°C).
Carefully add the coated onion rings in small batches. Do not overcrowd the pan.
Fry for about 2–3 minutes per side, or until golden brown and crisp.
5. Drain and Serve
Remove the onion chips with a slotted spoon and place them on a paper towel-lined plate or wire rack to drain excess oil.
Serve immediately while they are hot and crunchy.
Tips for Extra-Crispy Onion Ring Chips
- Use cold water when making the batter for a lighter, crispier coating.
- Cornstarch helps create an especially crunchy texture.
- Keep the oil temperature steady and avoid overcrowding the pan.
- Fry in small batches so the onion rings have plenty of room to crisp.
- A wire rack helps prevent the finished chips from becoming soggy.
- For extra flavor, add a pinch of cayenne pepper or your favorite seasoning blend.
Easy Dipping Sauces
These crispy onion chips are delicious with ranch dressing, garlic aioli, spicy mayonnaise, ketchup, barbecue sauce, or a creamy chipotle dip.
Storage
These onion chips are best enjoyed immediately while they are crisp. If you have leftovers, store them in an airtight container once completely cooled and reheat them in an air fryer or oven to help restore their crunch.
