Cabbage and Ground Beef
This hearty Cabbage and Ground Beef recipe is an easy, budget-friendly comfort meal made with tender cabbage, savory ground beef, tomatoes, onions, and garlic. Everything cooks together in one skillet for a simple dinner that is full of homemade flavor.
Ingredients
- 1 small head cabbage, chopped
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 can (15 oz) diced tomatoes
- 1 cup chopped onions
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 tablespoon bouillon powder
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1 tablespoon olive oil, if needed
- ½ cup water or beef broth
Instructions
1. Brown the Ground Beef
Heat a large skillet or Dutch oven over medium heat. Add the ground beef and cook for 5–7 minutes, breaking it apart with a spoon, until browned and cooked through.
Drain excess grease if necessary.
2. Add the Aromatics
Add the chopped onions and minced garlic to the beef. Cook for 2–3 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the onions become soft and fragrant.
3. Add the Cabbage
Add the chopped cabbage to the skillet. It may look like a lot at first, but the cabbage will quickly shrink as it cooks.
Stir everything together and cook for about 5 minutes.
4. Add Tomatoes and Seasonings
Pour in the diced tomatoes and their juices. Add the bouillon powder, paprika, black pepper, and water or beef broth.
Stir well to combine all the ingredients.
5. Simmer
Cover the skillet and reduce the heat to medium-low. Simmer for 20–25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the cabbage is tender and the flavors have blended together.
If you prefer softer cabbage, cook for another 5–10 minutes.
6. Serve
Taste and adjust the seasoning if needed. Serve hot with crusty bread, cornbread, rice, or mashed potatoes.
