Bay Leaves for Skin 🌿
Bay leaves contain aromatic compounds and antioxidants, which is why they’re sometimes used in homemade skincare. However, there isn’t strong clinical evidence that bay-leaf water or bay-leaf tea can significantly lighten skin, remove acne, or reverse wrinkles.
Simple Bay Leaf Face Water
Ingredients
- 3–4 dried bay leaves
- 1½ cups water
Directions
- Bring the water to a boil.
- Add the bay leaves.
- Simmer for 5–10 minutes.
- Turn off the heat and let it cool completely.
- Strain and transfer to a clean container.
- Apply a small amount to clean skin with a cotton pad.
- Leave it on for about 10 minutes, then rinse.
- Use 2–3 times per week initially.
Possible Uses
- May provide a mild refreshing effect.
- May have antioxidant properties.
- Can temporarily make skin feel cleaner or less oily.
- Its fragrance can make it pleasant as a homemade rinse.
Important Don’ts ⚠️
- Don’t apply concentrated bay-leaf oil directly to your face.
- Don’t use it on cuts, irritated skin, eczema, or freshly shaved skin.
- Don’t use it around the eyes.
- Don’t assume it will permanently whiten or brighten your skin.
- Stop immediately if you experience burning, redness, itching, or swelling.
Patch Test First
Apply a small amount behind your ear or on your inner arm and wait 24 hours. If there’s no irritation, you can try it on a small facial area first.
For dark spots, acne, or uneven skin tone, ingredients with much stronger evidence—such as niacinamide, vitamin C, azelaic acid, and sunscreen—are generally more reliable than bay leaves.
