Vaseline and Aspirin for Skin: Does It Remove Age Spots and Wrinkles?
A popular DIY skincare trick combines Vaseline (petroleum jelly) and crushed aspirin and claims it can erase age spots, wrinkles, or dark marks. However, there isn’t good evidence that this mixture can remove wrinkles or age spots.
Why People Use It
Vaseline is an effective occlusive moisturizer. It helps reduce water loss from the skin and can make dry skin look smoother and temporarily make fine lines less noticeable.
Aspirin contains acetylsalicylic acid. Although it is chemically related to salicylic acid, crushed aspirin isn’t an appropriate substitute for a properly formulated salicylic-acid skincare product. Applying it directly to the skin can cause irritation, dryness, or even a chemical burn.
A Safer DIY Option for Dry Skin
If your goal is softer, smoother-looking skin, you can simply use a very thin layer of plain Vaseline over your regular moisturizer at night.
- Wash your face with a gentle cleanser.
- Apply your normal moisturizer.
- Apply a very thin layer of Vaseline to dry areas.
- Leave it overnight and wash your face normally in the morning.
For Age Spots and Wrinkles
For more reliable results:
- Broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen: The most important step for preventing further sun-related spots and premature aging.
- Retinoid/retinol: Can improve fine lines and uneven pigmentation over time.
- Vitamin C: May help with uneven skin tone and provides antioxidant support.
- Niacinamide: Can help improve the appearance of uneven pigmentation and support the skin barrier.
If a dark spot is new, rapidly changing, bleeding, itching, or has an unusual shape or multiple colors, have it checked by a dermatologist rather than treating it at home.
Bottom line: Vaseline can moisturize and protect the skin barrier, but I wouldn’t recommend mixing aspirin with Vaseline or applying crushed aspirin to your face. It isn’t a proven wrinkle or age-spot treatment and can irritate your skin.
