Whole Oven-Baked Potato
A perfectly baked whole potato with crispy, golden skin and a soft, fluffy center. It’s an easy side dish or can be turned into a complete meal with your favorite toppings.
Ingredients
- 4 large russet potatoes
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 1 tsp salt
- ½ tsp black pepper
- ½ tsp garlic powder — optional
Instructions
1. Choose and Wash the Potatoes
Use large russet potatoes for the best fluffy interior.
Wash and scrub the potatoes thoroughly under cold water.
Pat them completely dry with a clean towel.
2. Pierce the Potatoes
Using a fork, poke each potato 6–8 times all around.
This allows steam to escape while baking.
3. Season the Skin
Rub each potato lightly with olive oil.
Sprinkle generously with salt and a little black pepper.
For extra flavor, add a small amount of garlic powder.
4. Bake the Potatoes
Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
Place the potatoes directly on the oven rack, with a baking sheet on the rack underneath to catch any drips.
Bake for approximately 50–65 minutes, depending on the size of the potatoes.
They’re ready when:
- The skin is crispy.
- A fork or knife slides easily into the center.
- The potato feels soft when gently squeezed with an oven mitt.
For very large potatoes, you may need 70–80 minutes.
5. Open the Potatoes
Remove the potatoes from the oven.
Immediately make a long slit across the top of each potato.
Gently squeeze the ends toward the center to open it.
Use a fork to fluff the inside.
🧈 Best Toppings
Add a generous spoonful of:
- Butter
- Sour cream
- Shredded cheddar cheese
- Chopped green onions
- Crispy bacon
- Black pepper
🌶️ Loaded Baked Potato
For a complete meal, top with:
- Cheddar cheese
- Cooked bacon
- Sour cream
- Green onions
- Shredded chicken or beef
- Jalapeños
Return the topped potato to the oven for 3–5 minutes to melt the cheese.
⭐ Tips for a Perfect Baked Potato
- Don’t wrap potatoes in foil if you want crispy skin; foil traps steam and makes the skin soft.
- Dry the potatoes thoroughly before adding oil.
- Russet potatoes produce the fluffiest center.
- Bake directly on the oven rack for better air circulation.
- Let the potato rest for 2–3 minutes before adding toppings.
