If you love the comforting layers of lasagna but don’t want to spend time boiling noodles, making complicated fillings, and carefully assembling every layer, this Ravioli Lasagna Bake is the perfect shortcut. It uses tender cheese-filled ravioli in place of traditional lasagna noodles, layered with rich marinara sauce, seasoned ground beef, creamy ricotta, and plenty of melted mozzarella.
The ravioli cooks directly in the sauce as it bakes, creating a hearty, cheesy casserole with crispy golden edges and a bubbling center. It is an easy weeknight dinner that tastes like you spent much longer in the kitchen.
Ingredients
For the Meat Sauce
- 1 pound (450 g) ground beef
- 1 small onion, finely diced
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 jar (24 oz/680 g) marinara sauce
- 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
- ½ teaspoon dried oregano
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon paprika
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
- 1 tablespoon olive oil, if needed
For the Cheese Layer
- 1 cup ricotta cheese
- ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
- ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
For Assembly
- 24–30 oz (680–850 g) refrigerated or frozen cheese ravioli
- 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley or basil
Instructions
1. Prepare the Meat Sauce
Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat.
Add the ground beef and cook for 5–7 minutes, breaking it apart with a spoon, until browned and cooked through.
Add the diced onion and cook for another 3–4 minutes until softened.
Stir in the garlic and cook for about 30 seconds.
Drain excess grease if necessary.
Add the marinara sauce, Italian seasoning, oregano, garlic powder, paprika, salt, and black pepper. Stir well and simmer for 5–8 minutes.
2. Prepare the Ricotta Mixture
While the sauce simmers, combine the ricotta, Parmesan, egg, Italian seasoning, garlic powder, salt, and pepper in a bowl.
Mix until smooth and creamy.
The egg helps the cheese layer set nicely while baking.
3. Assemble the Ravioli Lasagna
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
Spread a thin layer of meat sauce across the bottom of the dish.
Arrange a layer of ravioli over the sauce. Don’t worry if they don’t fit perfectly—the ravioli can overlap slightly.
Spoon small dollops of the ricotta mixture over the ravioli and gently spread it as evenly as possible.
Sprinkle with some mozzarella.
Repeat the layers:
Meat sauce → ravioli → ricotta mixture → mozzarella
Continue until the ingredients are used, finishing with a generous layer of meat sauce and shredded mozzarella.
Sprinkle Parmesan over the top.
4. Bake
Cover the baking dish tightly with aluminum foil.
Bake for 30 minutes.
Remove the foil and continue baking for another 15–20 minutes, or until the ravioli is tender, the sauce is bubbling, and the cheese is melted and golden.
For a more deeply browned top, place the casserole under the broiler for 1–2 minutes at the end. Watch it carefully because the cheese can burn quickly.
5. Rest Before Serving
Remove the casserole from the oven and let it rest for 10–15 minutes before cutting.
This gives the layers time to settle and makes the portions easier to serve.
Finish with fresh parsley or basil.
Tips for the Best Ravioli Lasagna
Use refrigerated ravioli when possible. They cook quickly and have a tender texture, although frozen ravioli can also be used.
Don’t skimp on the sauce. Ravioli needs enough moisture to cook properly in the oven.
Cover the dish during the first part of baking. This traps steam and helps cook the ravioli without drying out the casserole.
Let it rest. Cutting immediately after baking can make the layers slide apart.
Customize the cheese. Mozzarella gives you the classic stretchy topping, while Parmesan adds a sharper, nuttier flavor.
Easy Variations
Spinach Ravioli Lasagna
Use spinach-and-cheese ravioli instead of plain cheese ravioli for extra vegetable flavor.
Italian Sausage Version
Replace the ground beef with mild or hot Italian sausage for a richer, more strongly seasoned sauce.
Vegetarian Ravioli Bake
Skip the meat and make the sauce with sautéed mushrooms, zucchini, spinach, bell peppers, or extra marinara.
Creamy Ravioli Lasagna
Add a few spoonfuls of Alfredo sauce to the marinara for a creamy tomato sauce.
Extra Cheesy
Add a layer of provolone, fontina, or shredded cheddar along with the mozzarella.
What to Serve With Ravioli Lasagna
This casserole is filling enough to serve as a complete meal, but it pairs beautifully with:
- Garlic bread
- Caesar salad
- Simple green salad
- Roasted vegetables
- Steamed broccoli
- Garlic green beans
A crisp salad is especially good because its freshness balances the rich, cheesy casserole.
Storage and Reheating
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3–4 days.
Reheat individual portions in the microwave until heated through, or cover the casserole with foil and warm it in a 350°F (175°C) oven.
You can also assemble the casserole ahead of time, cover it tightly, and refrigerate it before baking. If baking directly from the refrigerator, allow additional cooking time and make sure the center is heated thoroughly.
