Classic Moist Chocolate Cake
Meta Description: This classic chocolate cake is rich, moist, soft, and incredibly chocolatey, topped with a smooth homemade chocolate frosting. An easy dessert perfect for birthdays and family gatherings.
Nothing beats a classic homemade chocolate cake. This recipe produces a wonderfully moist and tender cake with a deep chocolate flavor and a silky chocolate frosting. It’s simple enough for an everyday dessert but delicious enough for birthdays, holidays, and special celebrations.
The secret to an extra-moist chocolate cake is adding hot coffee or hot water to the batter. Coffee intensifies the chocolate flavor without making the cake taste like coffee.
Ingredients
For the Chocolate Cake
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 teaspoons baking soda
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 large eggs
- 1 cup buttermilk
- ½ cup vegetable oil
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 cup hot brewed coffee or hot water
For the Chocolate Frosting
- ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
- ⅔ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 3 cups powdered sugar
- ⅓ cup milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Pinch of salt
Instructions
1. Prepare the Oven
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
Grease two 9-inch round cake pans and line the bottoms with parchment paper. Lightly dust the sides with flour.
2. Combine the Dry Ingredients
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
Make sure the cocoa powder is evenly distributed throughout the flour mixture.
3. Add the Wet Ingredients
Add the eggs, buttermilk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract.
Beat with an electric mixer on medium speed for approximately 2 minutes, until the batter is smooth.
The batter will become quite thick at this stage.
4. Add the Hot Coffee
Slowly pour in the hot coffee while mixing on low speed.
The batter will become noticeably thinner. Don’t worry—this is exactly how it should look. The thin batter helps create a wonderfully moist cake.
Mix just until everything is combined.
5. Bake the Cakes
Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans.
Bake for approximately 28–32 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean or with a few moist crumbs.
Don’t overbake the cakes, as this can make them dry.
Remove the pans from the oven and allow the cakes to cool for about 10 minutes.
Carefully remove the cakes from the pans and transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.
6. Make the Chocolate Frosting
While the cakes cool, prepare the frosting.
Beat the softened butter until smooth and creamy.
Add the cocoa powder and mix until combined.
Gradually add the powdered sugar, alternating with the milk. Continue beating until the frosting becomes smooth and fluffy.
Add the vanilla extract and a pinch of salt.
If the frosting is too thick, add another tablespoon of milk. If it’s too thin, add a little more powdered sugar.
7. Assemble the Cake
Place one completely cooled cake layer on a serving plate.
Spread a generous layer of chocolate frosting over the top.
Place the second cake layer on top.
Cover the top and sides of the cake with the remaining frosting. Use a spatula to create smooth sides or decorative swirls.
For an extra chocolatey finish, sprinkle chocolate shavings or mini chocolate chips over the top.
Tips for the Best Chocolate Cake
Use room-temperature ingredients: Eggs and buttermilk blend more easily when they’re not ice cold.
Don’t overbake: Start checking the cake a few minutes before the recommended baking time.
Don’t skip the hot coffee: It enhances the cocoa flavor and contributes to a moist texture.
Cool completely before frosting: Warm cake can cause the frosting to melt and slide.
For extra richness: Add a thin layer of chocolate ganache between the cake layers before frosting.
Storage
Store the frosted cake in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days or refrigerate for up to 5 days.
If refrigerated, allow the cake to sit at room temperature for about 20–30 minutes before serving so the frosting becomes soft and creamy again.
This Classic Moist Chocolate Cake is rich, soft, deeply chocolatey, and wonderfully tender. With its creamy homemade chocolate frosting, it’s a timeless dessert that is sure to become a family favorite.
