Best Hack for Perfectly Boiled Eggs Every Time
The best simple hack is: start the eggs in already-boiling water, then immediately cool them in an ice bath. This gives you a set white, creamy yolk, and much easier peeling.
The Method
- Bring a pot of water to a full boil.
- Carefully lower cold eggs into the boiling water with a spoon.
- Reduce the heat slightly so the water maintains a gentle boil.
- Cook:
- 6 minutes → soft, runny yolk
- 8 minutes → jammy/creamy yolk
- 10 minutes → mostly firm yolk
- 12 minutes → fully hard-boiled
- Immediately transfer the eggs to a bowl of ice-cold water.
- Leave them there for 5–10 minutes.
- Crack the shell all over, then peel under running water if needed.
🔥 Extra Peeling Hack
Use eggs that have been in the refrigerator for several days rather than extremely fresh eggs. After the ice bath, gently crack the wider end first—there’s usually a small air pocket there, which gives you a good starting point for removing the shell.
Bonus: Don’t add vinegar or baking soda unless you specifically need them for another reason. The boiling-water + ice-bath method is the main trick that makes the biggest difference.
