🍓 Ingredients
For the Chocolate Cake
- 1 box chocolate cake mix
- Ingredients called for on the cake mix package
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
For the Strawberry Filling
- 8 oz (225 g) cream cheese, softened
- ½ cup powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup heavy whipping cream
- 2 cups fresh strawberries, diced
For the Chocolate Shell
- 2 cups semisweet or milk chocolate chips
- 2 tablespoons coconut oil
- ½ teaspoon vanilla extract, optional
For Decoration
- 1 cup fresh strawberries
- Chocolate shavings, optional
- Powdered sugar, optional
👩🍳 Instructions
1. Bake the Chocolate Cake
Prepare the chocolate cake according to the package instructions.
Pour the batter into a round cake pan and bake as directed.
Allow the cake to cool completely before assembling the dessert.
2. Prepare the Strawberry Cream
Beat the softened cream cheese and powdered sugar together until smooth.
Add the vanilla extract and mix well.
In a separate bowl, whip the heavy cream until stiff peaks form.
Gently fold the whipped cream into the cream cheese mixture.
Fold in the diced strawberries.
3. Assemble the Cake
Once the cake has cooled completely, place it on a serving plate.
If desired, carefully cut the cake horizontally into two layers.
Spread a generous layer of strawberry cream over the bottom layer.
Place the second cake layer on top and gently press down.
Spread a thin layer of the remaining strawberry cream over the top and sides.
Refrigerate for at least 1 hour to firm everything up.
4. Make the Chocolate Shell
Place the chocolate chips and coconut oil in a microwave-safe bowl.
Heat in 20–30 second intervals, stirring well after each interval, until completely melted and smooth.
Allow the chocolate mixture to cool slightly—it should be pourable but not hot.
5. Add the Chocolate Shell
Remove the chilled cake from the refrigerator.
Pour the melted chocolate over the top, gently spreading it toward the edges and allowing some chocolate to drip down the sides.
Work relatively quickly because the chocolate will begin to set when it touches the cold cake.
Decorate the top with fresh strawberries or chocolate shavings.
6. Chill
Place the cake in the refrigerator for 30–60 minutes, or until the chocolate shell is completely firm.
Let the cake sit at room temperature for about 10 minutes before slicing so the chocolate shell is easier to cut.
🍓 Serving
Slice the cake with a sharp knife and serve chilled.
For an extra indulgent presentation, add a fresh strawberry to each slice and drizzle with melted chocolate.
⭐ Tips for the Best Chocolate Shell Cake
- Make sure the cake is completely cool before adding the strawberry filling.
- Chill the assembled cake before pouring on the chocolate shell.
- Don’t pour extremely hot chocolate over the cake, as it can soften the filling.
- Fresh strawberries provide the best flavor and texture.
- If using frozen strawberries, thaw and drain them very well before adding them to the filling.
- For a dramatic chocolate crack, use a slightly thicker chocolate layer on top.
