Crockpot Chicken and Gravy
This Crockpot Chicken and Gravy is the ultimate easy comfort-food dinner. Tender chicken breasts slowly cook in a rich, savory gravy until juicy and flavorful. Serve it over creamy mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles for a cozy family meal.
Ingredients
- 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
- 1 can (10.5 oz) cream of chicken soup
- 1 packet (1 oz) chicken gravy mix
- 1 cup chicken broth
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon onion powder
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- ½ teaspoon dried thyme
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- ½ cup sour cream, optional
- 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley
Directions
1. Prepare the Chicken
Pat the chicken breasts dry with paper towels.
Season both sides with garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, and dried thyme.
2. Make the Gravy Mixture
In a bowl, whisk together the cream of chicken soup, chicken gravy mix, and chicken broth until smooth.
3. Add Everything to the Crockpot
Place the seasoned chicken breasts in the bottom of a 6-quart slow cooker.
Pour the gravy mixture over the chicken.
Add the butter on top.
4. Slow Cook
Cover and cook on:
- LOW for 4–6 hours, or
- HIGH for 2½–3½ hours
Cook until the thickest part of the chicken reaches 165°F (74°C).
5. Make the Gravy Creamy
If using sour cream, remove a small amount of the hot gravy and gradually whisk it into the sour cream.
Stir the mixture back into the slow cooker during the final 10–15 minutes.
Avoid boiling after adding the sour cream.
6. Finish the Chicken
Carefully remove the chicken and slice or shred it.
Return it to the slow cooker or serve whole.
Spoon plenty of the gravy over the chicken.
7. Serve
Serve hot over:
- Creamy mashed potatoes
- Steamed white rice
- Egg noodles
- Biscuits
Garnish with fresh parsley for a little color and freshness.
Recipe Tips
- Chicken thighs can be used instead of breasts and tend to stay especially juicy.
- Don’t add extra salt until you’ve tasted the finished gravy because the soup and gravy mix can already contain plenty of sodium.
- For deeper flavor, quickly sear the chicken before adding it to the slow cooker.
- Add sliced mushrooms or onions for an easy variation.
- If the gravy becomes too thick, stir in a little warm chicken broth.
- Let the chicken rest for a few minutes before slicing to help retain its juices.
- Refrigerate leftovers in an airtight container for 3–4 days.
- Reheat gently with extra gravy to keep the chicken moist.
