- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon smoked paprika
For the Garlic Butter
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves
- 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley
For the Mashed Potatoes
- 2 lb (900 g) potatoes, peeled and cubed
- 4 tablespoons butter
- ½ cup warm milk
- ¼ cup heavy cream, optional
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper
For the Asparagus
- 1 lb (450 g) asparagus, trimmed
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
Directions
1. Prepare the Potatoes
Place the peeled and cubed potatoes in a large pot.
Cover with cold water and add a pinch of salt.
Bring to a boil and cook for 15–20 minutes, or until the potatoes are fork-tender.
Drain thoroughly.
2. Make the Mashed Potatoes
Return the potatoes to the warm pot.
Add the butter, warm milk, heavy cream if using, salt, and black pepper.
Mash until smooth and creamy.
Keep warm while preparing the steak.
3. Prepare the Steak
Pat the steaks dry with paper towels.
Season both sides with salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and smoked paprika.
Let them sit at room temperature for about 15–20 minutes before cooking.
4. Sear the Steak
Heat a heavy skillet over medium-high heat.
Add the olive oil.
Place the steaks in the hot skillet and sear for approximately 3–5 minutes per side, depending on thickness and your preferred doneness.
Use a meat thermometer to check the internal temperature according to your preferred level of doneness.
Transfer the steaks to a plate and let them rest for 5–10 minutes.
5. Make the Garlic Butter
Reduce the skillet heat to medium-low.
Add the butter and minced garlic.
Cook for about 30–60 seconds, until fragrant.
Add the fresh thyme and parsley.
Spoon the garlic butter over the resting steaks.
6. Cook the Asparagus
Heat the olive oil in a separate skillet over medium-high heat.
Add the asparagus and season with garlic powder, salt, and black pepper.
Cook for 4–6 minutes, turning occasionally, until tender-crisp and lightly browned.
Finish with fresh lemon juice.
7. Assemble the Plate
Place a generous scoop of creamy mashed potatoes on each plate.
Add the asparagus and sliced steak.
Spoon extra garlic butter over the steak and serve immediately.
Recipe Tips
- Choose steaks that are similar in thickness so they cook evenly.
- Pat the steaks dry before seasoning for a better sear.
- Don’t skip the resting time—it allows the juices to redistribute.
- Use warm milk when making mashed potatoes for a smoother texture.
- Avoid overcooking the asparagus; it should remain slightly crisp.
- Add Parmesan cheese or roasted garlic to the mashed potatoes for extra flavor.
- For a richer garlic butter, add a small squeeze of lemon juice at the end.
