Bangers and Onions
Bangers and Onions is a simple, hearty comfort-food dish featuring juicy sausages and sweet caramelized onions cooked together in a rich, savory gravy. It’s easy to prepare and pairs perfectly with creamy mashed potatoes for a satisfying family dinner.
Ingredients
- 8 pork sausages
- 2 large onions, thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups beef or chicken broth
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
- ½ teaspoon dried thyme
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- ¼ teaspoon salt, or to taste
- 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley, optional
Directions
1. Brown the Sausages
Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
Add the sausages and cook for 8–10 minutes, turning occasionally, until browned on all sides and cooked through.
Transfer the sausages to a plate.
2. Cook the Onions
Add the butter to the same skillet.
Add the sliced onions and cook over medium-low heat for 10–15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until soft and golden brown.
Add the minced garlic and cook for another 30 seconds.
3. Make the Gravy
Sprinkle the flour over the onions and stir for about 1 minute.
Slowly pour in the broth while stirring constantly to prevent lumps.
Add the Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, thyme, and black pepper.
Bring the gravy to a gentle simmer and cook for 3–5 minutes, until it begins to thicken.
4. Return the Sausages
Place the cooked sausages back into the skillet.
Spoon the onion gravy over them.
Reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer for 5–8 minutes so the sausages absorb the flavors.
5. Taste and Serve
Taste the gravy and adjust the seasoning if needed.
Garnish with fresh parsley.
Serve the sausages and onions generously covered in gravy.
