Crispy Fried Dough
This Crispy Fried Dough is golden, crunchy on the outside, and soft and fluffy inside. Made with a simple homemade dough and fried until beautifully puffed, it’s a delicious treat that can be enjoyed sweet or savory.
Ingredients
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
- 2 teaspoons instant yeast
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup warm water
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, optional
- Vegetable oil, for frying
Optional Toppings
- Powdered sugar
- Cinnamon sugar
- Honey
- Maple syrup
- Chocolate sauce
- Savory herbs and grated cheese
Directions
1. Make the Dough
In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, instant yeast, and salt.
Add the warm water and vegetable oil.
Mix until a soft dough forms.
If the dough feels too dry, add a tablespoon of water at a time. If it’s too sticky, sprinkle in a little flour.
2. Knead
Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface.
Knead for about 5–7 minutes, until smooth and elastic.
Place it in a lightly oiled bowl and cover with a clean kitchen towel.
3. Let the Dough Rise
Allow the dough to rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until it has approximately doubled in size.
4. Shape the Dough
Punch the dough down gently to release excess air.
Divide it into small portions.
Roll each portion into a ball, or flatten them into small discs about ¼-inch thick.
5. Heat the Oil
Pour about 2 inches of vegetable oil into a deep, heavy-bottomed skillet or pot.
Heat the oil to approximately 350°F (175°C).
Always carefully monitor hot oil and avoid filling the pan too high.
6. Fry
Carefully place a few pieces of dough into the hot oil, leaving enough space between them.
Fry for about 2–3 minutes per side, turning occasionally, until puffed and golden brown.
Don’t overcrowd the pan, as this can lower the oil temperature and make the dough greasy.
7. Drain
Remove the fried dough using a slotted spoon or tongs.
Place on a paper towel-lined plate or wire rack to drain excess oil.
8. Serve
Serve warm with your favorite toppings.
For a sweet version, dust with powdered sugar or cinnamon sugar and drizzle with honey.
For a savory version, sprinkle with herbs, Parmesan, or a little salt.
Recipe Tips
- Make sure the water is warm rather than hot; very hot water can interfere with the yeast.
- Keep the oil close to 350°F (175°C) for crisp results.
- Fry in small batches for even browning.
- Let the oil return to temperature between batches.
- For extra flavor, add a pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg to a sweet dough.
- Fried dough is best enjoyed fresh and warm.
