- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 cup hot water or hot coffee
For the Chocolate Frosting

- 3 cups powdered sugar
- ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- ½ cup heavy cream
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- Pinch of salt
For the Chocolate Drip
- 4 oz (115 g) semi-sweet or dark chocolate, chopped
- ½ cup heavy cream
For the Decoration
- 12–15 chocolate wafer cookies
- 10–12 chocolate truffles
- Chocolate shavings, optional
- Mini chocolate chips, optional
Directions
1. Prepare the Cake Batter
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease two 9-inch round cake pans and line the bottoms with parchment paper.
In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
Add the eggs, buttermilk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract. Beat until the mixture is smooth and well combined.
Slowly pour in the hot water or coffee while mixing. The batter will be thin, which is normal.
2. Bake the Cakes
Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans.
Bake for 28–33 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean or with a few moist crumbs.
Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for about 10 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.
3. Make the Chocolate Frosting
Beat the softened butter until smooth and creamy.
Gradually add the powdered sugar and cocoa powder, alternating with the heavy cream. Add the vanilla and salt.
Beat for 2–3 minutes, until the frosting is light, smooth, and spreadable.
4. Assemble the Cake
Place one cooled cake layer on a serving plate.
Spread a generous layer of chocolate frosting over the top. Place the second cake layer on top.
Cover the entire cake with a thin layer of frosting to create a crumb coat. Refrigerate for 20–30 minutes.
Apply a final, even layer of frosting around the cake and smooth the sides and top.
5. Make the Chocolate Drip
Place the chopped chocolate in a heatproof bowl.
Heat the heavy cream until hot but not boiling. Pour it over the chocolate and let it sit for 2 minutes.
Stir slowly until completely smooth and glossy.
Allow the ganache to cool slightly so it is thick enough to drip without running all the way down the cake.
6. Add the Drip
Spoon the chocolate ganache around the edge of the chilled cake, allowing small drips to run naturally down the sides.
Pour or spread the remaining ganache over the top and gently smooth it toward the center.
7. Decorate
Arrange the chocolate wafer cookies and chocolate truffles around the top of the cake.
Add chocolate shavings or mini chocolate chips if desired.
Refrigerate the finished cake for at least 30 minutes before slicing.
Recipe Tips
- Make sure the cake layers are completely cool before frosting.
- Chill the cake before adding the ganache to create cleaner drips.
- Test one drip first. If the ganache runs too quickly, let it cool for a few more minutes.
- Don’t overbake the cake; a few moist crumbs on the toothpick are ideal.
- Use good-quality chocolate for a richer ganache.
- For extra crunch, crush a few chocolate wafers and sprinkle them between the cake layers.
- Store the finished cake covered in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Let it sit at room temperature for 20–30 minutes before serving.
