Air Fryer Onion Petals
Crispy, golden, and flavorful, Air Fryer Onion Petals are a delicious alternative to deep-fried onion rings. Sweet onion wedges are coated in a seasoned crispy breading and air-fried until crunchy on the outside and tender inside. They’re perfect as an appetizer, snack, or side dish with your favorite dipping sauce.
Ingredients
For the Onion Petals
- 2 large sweet onions
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- ½ cup cornstarch
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- ½ teaspoon smoked paprika
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper — optional
- 2 large eggs
- ½ cup buttermilk
- 1½ cups panko breadcrumbs
- Cooking spray or olive oil spray
For the Dipping Sauce
- ½ cup mayonnaise
- 2 tablespoons ketchup
- 1 teaspoon lemon juice
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon paprika
- ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper — optional
Directions
1. Prepare the onions
Peel the onions and cut off the tops. Cut each onion into quarters, then cut each quarter into smaller wedges.
Separate the layers carefully to create individual onion petals. Try to keep the petals relatively large so they don’t break during coating.
2. Prepare the seasoned flour
In a bowl, combine:
- Flour
- Cornstarch
- Paprika
- Garlic powder
- Onion powder
- Smoked paprika
- Salt
- Black pepper
- Cayenne pepper
Mix everything thoroughly.
3. Prepare the wet mixture
In another bowl, whisk together the eggs and buttermilk until smooth.
4. Prepare the breadcrumbs
Place the panko breadcrumbs in a third bowl.
For extra flavor, you can add a small pinch of paprika, garlic powder, and black pepper to the breadcrumbs.
5. Coat the onion petals
Take each onion petal and coat it in the seasoned flour.
Shake off the excess, then dip it into the egg mixture.
Finally, press it firmly into the panko breadcrumbs, making sure the entire surface is covered.
Repeat with the remaining onion petals.
6. Preheat the air fryer
Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C) for about 3–5 minutes.
Lightly spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray.
7. Air fry
Arrange the onion petals in a single layer, leaving some space between them. Don’t overcrowd the basket.
Lightly spray the tops with cooking spray.
Air fry at 375°F (190°C) for 8–10 minutes.
Carefully flip the petals, spray lightly again, and cook for another 4–7 minutes, or until they’re golden brown and crispy.
Cooking time can vary slightly depending on the air fryer and the size of your onion petals.
8. Make the dipping sauce
While the onions are cooking, combine mayonnaise, ketchup, lemon juice, garlic powder, paprika, and cayenne pepper in a small bowl.
Mix until smooth.
9. Serve
Remove the onion petals from the air fryer and let them cool for 2–3 minutes.
Serve immediately with the dipping sauce.
Tips for Extra Crispy Onion Petals
- Don’t overcrowd the basket. Air needs to circulate around the onions.
- Use panko breadcrumbs for a crunchier coating.
- Press the breadcrumbs onto the onions rather than simply sprinkling them.
- Spray the coating lightly with oil before air frying.
- Cook in batches if necessary.
- Serve immediately for the best texture.
Easy Variations
Spicy Onion Petals: Add extra cayenne pepper or chili powder to the coating.
Cheesy Onion Petals: Mix 2–3 tablespoons of finely grated Parmesan into the breadcrumbs.
Ranch Style: Add 1 teaspoon of ranch seasoning to the flour mixture.
BBQ Style: Add 1 teaspoon of BBQ seasoning to the breadcrumb mixture.
These crispy onion petals are best enjoyed hot and fresh, when the coating is at its crunchiest.
