Ingredients
For the Crust
- 2 refrigerated pie crusts
- 1 tablespoon butter, melted
- ½ teaspoon Italian seasoning
- ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
For the Filling
- 1 pound ground beef
- ½ pound Italian sausage, casings removed
- 5 ounces sliced pepperoni
- 1 small onion, diced
- 1 green bell pepper, diced
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1½ cups pizza sauce or thick marinara sauce
- 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
- ½ teaspoon dried oregano
- ½ teaspoon smoked paprika
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- ¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes, optional
- 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- ½ cup shredded cheddar cheese
- ¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese
For the Egg Wash
- 1 egg
- 1 tablespoon water
Instructions
1. Prepare the Oven
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
Grease a deep 9-inch pie dish or deep-dish baking pan.
Place one pie crust into the bottom of the dish, gently pressing it against the bottom and sides.
Leave some excess crust around the edge.
2. Cook the Ground Beef and Sausage
Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat.
Add the ground beef and Italian sausage.
Cook for approximately 7–9 minutes, breaking the meat apart with a wooden spoon as it cooks.
Continue until the meat is browned and fully cooked.
Drain excess grease.
3. Add the Vegetables
Add the diced onion and bell pepper to the skillet.
Cook for approximately 4–5 minutes, until softened.
Add the minced garlic and cook for another 30 seconds.
4. Season the Filling
Add the Italian seasoning, oregano, smoked paprika, black pepper, and red pepper flakes if using.
Stir thoroughly.
Pour in the pizza sauce and mix well.
Simmer for approximately 3–5 minutes, allowing the mixture to thicken slightly.
Remove from the heat and let it cool for about 5–10 minutes.
5. Layer the Pie
Sprinkle about ½ cup mozzarella cheese over the bottom crust.
Add half of the meat mixture.
Arrange a layer of pepperoni over the meat.
Sprinkle with another layer of mozzarella and cheddar.
Add the remaining meat mixture.
Finish with the remaining mozzarella and Parmesan.
This layered approach ensures every slice contains plenty of meat, cheese, and pepperoni.
6. Add the Top Crust
Carefully place the second pie crust over the filling.
Trim excess dough and crimp the edges together with the bottom crust to seal the pie.
Cut several small slits in the center of the crust to allow steam to escape.
7. Add the Egg Wash
Whisk together the egg and water.
Brush the mixture evenly over the top crust.
For extra flavor, sprinkle the crust with a little Italian seasoning and garlic powder.
8. Bake
Place the pie on a baking sheet to catch any bubbling sauce.
Bake for approximately 35–45 minutes, until the crust is deeply golden and the filling is bubbling.
If the crust begins browning too quickly, loosely cover the edges with aluminum foil.
9. Rest Before Slicing
Remove the pie from the oven and allow it to rest for 15–20 minutes.
This is important because the cheese and sauce need time to set.
Slice into wedges and serve warm.
Tips for the Best Hamburger Sausage & Pepperoni Pie
Drain the meat well: Excess grease can make the bottom crust soggy.
Use thick pizza sauce: A thicker sauce helps the filling hold together better.
Don’t skip the resting time: Cutting immediately can cause the filling to spill out.
Don’t overfill: Leave enough room for the top crust to seal properly.
Use freshly shredded cheese: It melts smoothly and gives the pie a better texture.
Easy Variations
Supreme Pizza Pie
Add mushrooms, black olives, banana peppers, or additional bell peppers.
Extra Cheesy
Add provolone, Monterey Jack, or extra mozzarella.
Spicy Version
Use hot Italian sausage and add sliced jalapeños or extra red pepper flakes.
Bacon Cheeseburger Version
Add cooked, crumbled bacon and replace some of the mozzarella with cheddar.
Vegetable Version
Add mushrooms, spinach, zucchini, or roasted peppers.
Storage
Store leftover pie in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3–4 days.
Reheat individual slices in the oven or air fryer to bring back the crispness of the crust.
You can also freeze fully baked slices for up to 2 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating.
